Our Location

We are uniquely located on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico with direct access to the Houston and Galveston ports, shipping lanes, estuaries, and coastlines, which serve as our natural laboratories for hands-on learning, training and research. Students benefit from practical experiences, such as ocean voyages, sailing in Galveston Bay, beachfront experiments and independent studies with internationally renowned faculty.

Advancing the Blue Economy

Our academic programs explore the economic, social, political, and ecological aspects of our oceans and coasts, aiming to enhance understanding, stewardship, and sustainability of these vital resources. Together, these elements comprise the blue economy.

Through scholarship and research, we work to protect coastal communities, conserve marine life, and discover innovative solutions for smart shipping and safe ports. Our efforts contribute to creating a sustainable ecosystem that supports improved livelihoods and future job opportunities.

Texas A&M Maritime Academy

We also support the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, one of six state maritime academies in the nation, through our programs that combine an undergraduate or graduate degree with U.S. Coast Guard license to serve as officers on ocean-going vessels. These licenses prepare graduates for research, industry and maritime service throughout the world. In addition to a rigorous classroom curriculum, hands-on training takes place annually during summer semesters at sea aboard our training ship, the TS Kennedy. This vessel serves as a floating classroom, laboratory and dormitory for students to earn practical experience to apply classroom theory.
