Marine, Coastal & Maritime Research in the Gulf and around the Globe
We are in a natural laboratory with direct access to the Galveston and Houston ports, shipping lanes, estuaries, coastline, and the Gulf of Mexico. We are surrounded by tourism, oil, gas, and transportation industries. Our internationally known faculty conduct research worldwide in areas such as the Arctic, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and countries such as New Zealand, Brazil, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy and Japan.

Our researchers focus on the economic, social, political and ecological vitality of our oceans and surrounding ecosystems. We engage in scholarship and research that helps protect our coastal communities and conserve our marine life and oceans. We are discovering smart shipping and safe port solutions. We are contributing to an inclusive ecosystem with improved livelihoods and future jobs.
We believe a holistic approach is essential to a prosperous and sustainable blue economy and cultivate opportunities for faculty and students to excel in marine and maritime research in science, engineering, business, policy and security.

Our undergraduates work side-by-side with award-winning faculty to conduct research long before graduation. From research cruises in Galveston Bay to field sites worldwide, undergraduates are making a difference in real-world problems that impact marine wildlife and resources, coastal communities, maritime industries and infrastructure.
